    Abstract

This chapter examines the socioeconomic burden of foodborne parasites. We present the importance of estimating the burden of disease from a public health perspective and briefly outline the methods used, the types of data required, and how disease burden estimates may be used to help formulate health policy. The chapter summarizes the current body of knowledge on the burden of foodborne parasites from a global standpoint and describes the limitations and challenges faced to make these estimates accurately.
