Abstract

This book is an attempt to illuminate the educational activities of medicine in relation to ethics by pulling together a number of perspectives from a variety of disciplines, approaches and research programs. My specific concern is with what we are doing when we teach ethics to medical students and healthcare professionals. How it is that individual students and professionals learn about ethics, particularly as a member of (or as an part of becoming a member of) a group? This perspective includes considering medical students within particular classes or cohorts of other such individuals as well as in the wider context of the profession as a whole. Medical education aims at producing individuals who are well equipped and suitably qualified to join the medical profession and therefore to practice medicine. Medical ethics education aims to produce medical students who can engage in the practice of medical ethics (as distinct from simply putting medical ethics into practice).
