    Abstract

I would encourage all of you to do what I am currently doing and scan through the Contents pages of the first couple of decades of our journal. It is fascinating to see all the names of the authors, many of whom are now very senior in our profession and who were, at that time, publishing some of their first papers. During the 1970s, you can see various things emerging such as the use of laparoscopy and the important role of prostaglandins in termination of pregnancy. It is also of great interest to me to see some of the earliest Australian articles on the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and how it might assist in fetal therapy. Ultrasound has, of course, been the diagnostic window through which the subspeciality of maternal‐fetal medicine has been able to develop.
