    Abstract

In this paper, we introduced the novel idea of linear spatial preceding based on fixed and known parameters of a MIMO channel where antenna spacing and antenna placement at the transmitter and receiver arrays are considered as fixed parameters. This precoder reduces the effects of antenna spacing and antenna placement and improves the performance of space-time coded MIMO systems. Unlike the previous precoder designs found in the literature, this precoder does not require frequent feedback of channel state information (partial or full) from the receiver. Closed form solutions for the precoder is presented for systems with up to three receiver antennas. A generalized method is proposed for more than three receiver antennas. Simulation results show that at low SNRs, this precoder provides significant performance improvement over a non-precoded system for small antenna aperture sizes.
