Abstract
The stability of multimode model of a continuously pumped atom laser, below a critical value of the scattering length, was discussed. It was found that the atom laser reached a steady state above the critical scattering length and its stability increased with pumping. The analysis showed that the instability of pumped atom lasers resulted from the competition between gain and loss for the excited states of the lasing mode.
