Abstract
Sourcesofstaterevenuehaveimplicationsforthebuildingofstateinstitutionsandgovernance.State-buildingcruciallydependsonhowrevenueis collected,includingthecompromisesrulersmakewiththeircitizenstocollect (anduse)revenue,theinstitutionalcapacitythestatedevelopstoachievethis task,andtheextenttowhichtheinstitutionalarrangementsreflecttheinterestsofboththerulersandtheruled.Thestate-buildingliteraturedemonstratesthatrevenuesourcesmayhavedifferentimplicationsforthepatternof state-building.Taxandnon-taxrevenues(oilandforeignaid)thusproduce particularpoliticalandinstitutionaloutcomes.
