    Abstract

In this chapter I will refer to metrics the goal of which is the measurement of biodiversity under the umbrella term 'biodiversity surrogates'. My aim is to explore the current state of the science of biodiversity measurement, discuss how a reliance on surrogates influences conservation decisions, and suggest future directions for this important area of ecological research.
