Abstract
AUSTRALIANS have long regarded Thailand as an ideal holiday destination. Last year almost 400,000 Australians jetted off to enjoy the much-vaunted beaches, bars and bargains, so it must come as a shock to see tourists caught up in an ugly siege at Bangkok's international airport. Thailand's messy politics is certainly generating disturbing images that risk destroying the country's "land of smiles" reputation. What is going on?
