    Abstract

This article presents a detailed discussion of the revision process by David Hawkes and John Minford in their English translation of The Story of the Stone. David Hawkes passed away in July 2009, before he had completed editing the second volume of the bilingual edition of The Story of the Stone. It was subsequently published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press in 2012. I collated this bilingual edition, and this article details the process of revision in David Hawkes and John Minford's final published translation. John Minford's revision includes the changes he made to David Hawkes' translation of the first 80 chapters of the novel and the modifications applied to his own translation of the last 40 chapters.
