Abstract

Presentation 1: Defining and Conceptualising the CDOH, Anna B Gilmore This presentation outlines a definition for and simple conceptual model of the CDOH. It explains the system nature of the problem in which our current global political and economic system enables rather than constrains harmful commercial practices and, consequently, why downstream interventions are wholly insufficient to address NCDs and other commercially driven health harms. Presentation 2: Understanding Commercial Actors: A new Framework, Jennifer Lacy-Nichols This presentation outlines a new framework to enable meaningful distinctions between commercial entities. It explores how this framework can be operationalised, for example as tool for decision-making about engagement, managing conflicts of interest, or monitoring and research around the CDOH. Presentation 3: Finding Solutions to the Commercial Determinants of Health: The need for Systemic Transformative Change, Sharon Friel This presentation explores solutions to the CDOH. It proposes a multi-level governance system that privileges public interests over profits and challenges contemporary capitalism. This includes progressive economic models, international frameworks, government regulation, compliance mechanisms for commercial entities and business models that incorporate health, social and environmental goals. Key Questions that the Workshop Will Address How can we best define and understand the CDOH?Can we develop a simple model that allows us to conceptualise and therefore address the CDOH?What are they key pathways through which the commercial sector influences health? How can we better understand and deal with the diversity of corporate actors? What potential solutions can be taken to redress the inequitable health harms arising from this complex problem? What role can be played by WHO and other public health actors?.
