    Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

    Abstract

This essay attempts to use the methodology proposed by Chen Yuan in Examples of Scholarly Editing to examine how David Hawkes organized his translation of Hong Lou Meng (The Story of the Stone). Hu Shih summarized that there are three elements in scholarly editing, namely finding mistakes, correcting them, and justifying the corrections. The editing evidence in David Hawkes English version of Hong Lou Meng demonstrates that he found numerous mistakes in the edition he used and rectified them in his own translation. This essay explores the reasons for his corrections by comparing his English translation with the collated Chinese editions
