title = "The Evolution of the Roman Imperial Court in Historical Context",
abstract = "This chapter weaves the conclusions of individual papers into a broader consideration of the transformation of the imperial court between the Principate and Late Antiquity. It focuses on the following key themes: the movement between the {\textquoteleft}court-in-capital{\textquoteright} model and peripatetic courts; the dynamics of imperial ceremonial, and the role played by both emperors and courtiers in its development; the articulation of the court community in terms of offices and structures; and the role of imperial women. In each case, the trajectory of historical development in the Roman Empire is compared with other Eurasian monarchical societies in order to determine points of similarity and difference.",
