Abstract

This chapter focuses on an independent assessment of the likely level, industrial distribution and occupational structure of the demand for labour which will be generated directly and indirectly as a result of the new developments taking place in the Hunter Valley. This growth in labour demand is then examined in the context of the existing labour market situation, in order to assess the likely impact of the new developments on unemployment and skilled labour availability in the region. The market cost of this labour, to project developers and government authorities, as well as its social opportunity cost to the community, also is estimated to form an input into the broader study, of the overall costs and benefits of the new coal-based developments in the Hunter region to the Australian community. The Hunter region’s labour market reflects the strong orientation of the local economy towards heavy industry, and in particular metal processing, coal mining and to a lesser extent, electricity generation.
