    Abstract

In early 1942, Australia faced its darkest hour. The Japanese occupied New Guinea, Singapore had fallen, and the Australian mainland was under direct attack by Japanese bombing raids. Later, there would be Japanese submarine attacks on Sydney Harbour and Newcastle. Prime Minister John Curtin described this time as 'the gravest hour in our history'.
