Abstract
In Australia, mental disorders are the leading cause of years lost due to disability and account for almost 30% of the non-fatal burden of disease. However, very little is known about the prevalence of common mental disorders in elite athletes, or about help-seeking rates and the factors that potentially influence help-seeking for mental disorders. Further, little is known about the mental health status of Australian Football League (AFL) elite athletes. The current paper describes the results of a 2010-2011 survey of the symptom levels of common mental disorders in AFL athletes using cross-sectional survey research methodology. Additional aims were to assess elite athletes mental health literacy, prior help-seeking behaviour, degree of comfort and behaviour regarding discussing mental health problems, and the athletes ideas for future mental health services
