    Abstract

This chapter looks at the ways in which Australian electoral regulation departs from principles of the level playing field for electoral competition, as set down in international guidelines. Australia is found to particularly lag behind best practice in the area of regulating political finance but is also confronting the intractable problems of regulating the dissemination of misleading material through social media. A relaxed attitude towards the use of government and parliamentary resources for electioneering compounds the regulatory challenges at the federal level.
