    Abstract

    Wang Gungwu is certainly a card-carrying China scholar and a very distinguished one. He earned his PhD in Chinese History at the School of Oriental and African Studies, occupied the chair of East Asian History at Australian National University longer than any other professional appointment, and crowned his distinguished career as director and subsequently chairman of the East Asian Institute in Singapore. Most of his formidable list of books have China in the title
