    Abstract

This chapter surveys the events of 1968 and the '68 years. The events of May 1968 - student revolt, general strike, and vacuum of state power - are placed in their long-term context. The impact of "1968" is analyzed via the education system, workers’ revolt, immigrant politics, feminism, and the rise and fall of Far Left gauchisme. In addition to outlining key interpretations in the historiography of 1968, the chapter sketches how the public memory of 1968 cohered around a myth of a progressive, if bland, event of cultural modernization.
