In 1976 Raymond Williams published an article in this journal called ‘Developments in the Sociology of Culture’. Far from being an introductory primer, it practised Williams’s well-honed combination of critical exegesis and assessment of likely future prospects. Williams advised watching closely developments in research around ‘signs’ and ‘sign systems’ as a likely clustering point in the next phase of the sociology of culture. He chided sociologists for the lack
of development of a sociology of sign systems.
