N2 - On 15 November 2004, Australia lodged only the third submission by a coastal state to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. The ten discrete areas in which Australia's continental shelf extends beyond 200 nautical miles from the territorial sea baseline total over 3 million square kilometers. This article outlines Australia's submission on the basis of the published executive summary and the procedural rules of the Commission that are to govern its examination, exploring some of the submission's implications for other states in terms of Article 76 of the Law of the Sea Convention.
