Abstract
This paper analyses the situation of trade union freedom in the People's Republic of China from two angles. First, it considers the limitations that characterise the union model of the official Chinese trade union, the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Second, it delves into the alternatives models of unionism 'without union' represented by those civil society organisations that are attempting to provide the workers with alternative strategies to defend their rights.
