Abstract
The transverse stability of strongly nonlinear ion-acoustic structures, described by the general Sagdeev potential, is investigated. It is shown, that the multi-scale stability analysis by [Sov. Phys. Dokl. 15 (1970) 539] for solitary waves, described by a weakly dispersive and weakly nonlinear equation, can be generalized for strongly nonlinear systems. The stability of plasma ion sheath formed at the plasma-boundary interface and the double-layer formed in a two-component plasma has been specifically studied and dispersion relations for transverse ion oscillations have been obtained.
