NICHOLAS Thomas is the best known historian of the Pacific Ocean and among the most original and prolific. Islanders: The Pacific in the Age of Empire is at least his 10th monograph since 1986, in addition to numerous edited and collaborative books. He combines high productivity with outstanding scholarship.
