    Abstract

Unlike conventional materials like metals, insulators, semiconductors, composites etc., the smart materials are designed properties that can be engineered in several ways. Metamaterials appear as a class of smart materials, which are fabricated from assemblies of multiple elements from composite materials, such as metals or plastics metamaterials might exhibit specific electro-magnetic or acoustic properties, not observed in the materials commonly found in nature. Here we review the history and concepts of metamaterials. Some possible applications of these exotic materials will be discussed.
