Abstract
Another round of intensive courses were successfully completed by ANU students over the winter session with studies ranging from sustainable development in Fiji to harvesting in Batlow. The students who visited Fiji were engaged in the Island Sustainable Development course convened by Dr Ian Fry, where they gained hands-on experience with a wide range of sustainable development issues ranging from forestry through to tourism and fisheries management. Dr David Freudenbergers course - Australias Forests - ran from the snow covered forests of Batlow to the waters off Edrom Lodge near Eden. Students with David were introduced to the extensive range of forest goods and services and the wicked problem of attempting to balance conflicting objectives and goals. Along the way, the students engaged in forest restoration and regeneration; harvesting plantations and native forests; sawmilling and fine furniture manufacture; feral animal control and conservation forests. The student feedback from both courses has been very positive and I have already received enquiries about enrolling for the next Island Sustainable Development course
