Value creation and museums from an Indigenous perspective

For Indigenous people, accessing and engaging with cultural material held in museum collections involves a particular form of 'value creation.' Understanding, navigating and reconciling the imposed hierarchies of value that have been placed around cultural material in collections is a form of contemporary cultural engagement, and one that can reveal much about the journeys of collections as well as the relationships they have and continue to generate. This chapter investigates contemporary Indigenous engagement with museum collections and looks to the vernacular to find where and how new values become articulated, while considering whom these new values are for.
