Valuing Aboriginal cultural activity: Beyond markets

    Abstract

This chapter reflects on the work of Professor Jon Altman, particularly his hybrid economy model developed initially in his early research in Arnhem Land, when he collected and analysed data pertaining to the customary economy and its relationship with the welfare state and market sectors of the hybrid economy. The focus on market equivalent measures of this customary economy is noted, and an approach that seeks to capture value in cultural activity beyond the market value is identified as a basis for the author's planned doctoral research.
