    Abstract

This paper situates Vietnam within the Neolithic prehistory of eastern Asia, from the Yangzi Valley southwards. After discussing the final Palaeolithic cultures, it examines the Neolithic developments that commenced about 4,000 years ago with the southwards spread of rice agriculture from the Yangzi region in China.
