    Abstract

After having declined rapidly in the 1990s with the explosion of motorcycle ownership, cycling in Vietnam is once more on the rise. At its nadir, the bicycle was considered a vehicle of the urban poor and relic of the past. In recent years the urban middle classes have rediscovered cycling as a form of leisure, sport and conspicuous consumption, and its image is undergoing a renovation.
