Abstract
Because vision operates in closed loop, the organization of behavior plays an important role in visual information processing by facilitating image processing through the separation of rotational and translational optic flow (the pattern of image motion on the retina of a moving observer) and by actively generating visual information through specially tailored movements. This interdependence of vision and behavior is so fundamental that different animals with very different visual systems have evolved very similar ways in which to stabilize gaze, to make use of the information content of optic flow, and to organize behavior in the service of vision.
