Abstract
A review of a new translation of Dante Alighieri's 'Purgatorio' (NYRB, 2021) by British poet and psychoanalyst D.M. Black. This review assesses the philosophical coherence of Black's psychoanalytic approach to interpreting and commenting on Dante's text, and the effectiveness of Black's modern-English verse translation.
