Abstract
The opening moments provide a synopsis: aerial views of grassy hills and seashore accompany Chamorro voices recalling the horrors of the Japanese occupation and the enduring reminders of war, cutting to footage of survivors tending a memorial. A lone candle burns evocatively amongst green foliage. The thrust of the film is laid out in no uncertain terms: a Chamorro scholar observes, There was a huge sense of gratitude when the Americans rescued us; the problem is what the Americans did with that gratitude, and a dispossessed landowner states grimly that the war is not yet over for us.
