    Abstract

    This chapter discusses regional prehistory and the emergence of agriculture in the highlands; the wetlands of the New Guinea highlands; the history of wetland archaeological research; archaeological sequences; ethnographic analogues; and wetland use in the New Guinea lowlands. It concludes by explaining how the archaeology of wetland agriculture in the New Guinea highlands contributes to a global understanding of wetland archaeology.
