    Abstract

The prospective measures, that the society should take to reduce the exhaust noise, produced by the cars and motor cycles in the cities, are discussed. The current statutory limit for exhaust noise which is 90 dB(A), has not been reduced for many years, and is ineffective in reducing exhaust noise. The society should pressurize the government agencies to undertake more random roadside noise checks. The noise emission standards should also be tightened, by around 10 dB, using acoustic muffler technology. The society should also try to regulate the exhaust noise from the lawnmowers, which is very loud at 75 dB(A).
