    Abstract

On September 16, 2009 Australian newspapers reported that the French president Nicolas Sarkozy was proposing that the Gros National Product and similiar economic indicators should be replaced with an "index of happiness" as a measure of a country's economic, social and political achievements. He was also reported as saying that France would lead other nations in placing people's happiness ahead of measures like the Gross National Product.
