Abstract
Wierzbicka & Goddards (2017) (W&G) search for lexification in Warlpiri of the concept part has led them to the conclusion that part is a previously unrecognised additional sense of the common Warlpiri recognitional demon- strative yangka. We investigate their reductio ad absurdum and identify as- pects of their method and assumptions which have led them astray. These include: the relinquishing of the principle of monosemy (Ruhl, 1989), the failure to distinguish inferential pragmatics from intensional semantics, mis- apprehension of translation, overlooking the role of definitional templates (in PPJs vernacular definitions), and distortion of comparative evidence.
