Abstract
When you hear the term ‘smart city,’ what images come to mind? Driverless vehicles seamlessly zipping between glassy blue buildings? Blue lights forming a winking network connecting shiny skyscrapers? Seamlessly-integrated transportation, water and electricity systems? Folding chairs stacked everywhere? Or something else entirely? Will smart cities have trees? It depends. This short provocation sits at the intersections of environment, health and technology. It is not a study of what has already been, but a conversation about what could be in future: a future – or multiple possible futures – that people skilled in health and the environmental humanities could help imagine and build.
