Abstract

Of all the countries considered in this text, none is perhaps so obviously dependent upon the skills, talents and knowledge of its people than Singapore. The small island nation of just 700 square kilometers and 5.4 million people – often endearingly described by its citizenry as ‘our little red dot’ – was unceremoniously ejected from the Federation of Malaya in 1965 and left to forge for survival in the absence of significant resource endowments (including no permanent water source) or a hinterland.
