Biography

I research ancient Chinese philosophical and historical texts. I think it is equally important to give due attention to their philological complexities and to remain in touch with the big picture reasons they are still worth reading. I am particularly concerned with such questions as, "How and why do we seek to know about the past?" and "How do we negotiate the different types of conflicts that arise as a result of our inquiry?" I was trained as a sinologist but have since branched out into comparative philosophy as well. I have taught at the University of Illinois-Chicago (2007-2012) and at the University of Sydney (2013-2020).
